The Theory of the Kokiri

Written by Alagbor

Where to begin, I am lost in the depths of a trilogy about the Kokiri, and yet they have grown so complicated that I dare not begin with their History.
There is a writer and theorist of the Legend of Zelda that inspired me to begin writing and threw me into the series. His name is the Missing Link and his legacy is the Book of Mudora. In one the early chapters he states that the Kokiri were believed to have “three-fold the power of Hylians”. By those terms he meant three times more magic power. The very thought is astonishing, and opens up a multitude of speculations, and questions.
So for seven years I conceive my trilogy, and the first thing that crossed my mind, what are these powers that the Kokiri have? Eternal Youth to start, that one is obvious. Saria can speak to Link telepathically when a melody is played, there is the second power. But I could find no third. And so I read, and studied and researched. And I discovered in Norse mythology, a creature that seemed like a Kokiri in every aspect, gifted with “Eternal Youth”. So I pondered the phrase, and had an epiphany, their youth is indeed eternal. Eternal means forever, and a bold notion came to my mind. I referred to writer J.R.R. Tolkien’s adaptation of elves being immortal. As my trilogy was to be a Middle-Earth crossover, and with Norse Mythology in mind I came to the conclusion that the third power of the Kokiri must indeed be immortality.
There was, though, one doubt in my mind. If Kokiri were peaceful, and did not die of age, why then were there so few? Did they even reproduce? To answer this one must understand how a Kokiri would into being. I did not doubt that Kokiri reproduction was tied into the Great Deku Trees. For in the Ocarina of Time, The Great Deku Tree has the role as what seems almost to be a parent. Even he refers to the Kokiri as “the children of the forest”. The actual process of creation will remain a mystery though, left to fantasy, where in my trilogy they are created by some strange vague system of cloning, which I conceived so that Kokiran families and blood relatives can become possible. The important fact is that Kokiri come from Deku Trees.
But even so, why are there so few Kokiri if they are immortal? This theory goes from here largely on bits and pieces of evidence. The Kokiri are told by a wary deku tree that they will die if they leave the forest. There is no mentioned reason why. Many have speculated as to why, and I have another. I have a feeling the Deku Tree is trying to protect what he thinks may be a dying out race. Indeed, there are many dangers in the open world, and for a small band impish people with little knowledge of Hyrule they may very well find themselves dead, especially when the last outsider was a dying Hylian woman who brought tidings of a ruthless war. The Kokiri clearly can live in the outside world without trouble as they survived fine during the victory celebration after Ganon’s defeat in oot.
But why the reduced numbers? Because maybe the Kokiri, like all civilizations and races, have had an ill-fated past, perhaps there were more Kokiri, perhaps they were not always living in tree stumps, perhaps they were not always so unsophisticated. Maybe they suffered a war in which evil overwhelmed them, perhaps the Kokiris’ mask of happiness covers up a hidden message to Link. If he does not destroy Ganon, the Hylians too, may find themselves hiding in the woods.
