Spirit Tracks Name Differences December 13, 2009

I've now got my Australian copy of Spirit Tracks. Having played some of the US version already, as well as following the game ever since it was announced, I quickly noticed a couple of differences in the naming of characters and places between the versions. For example, the character Byrne is called Staven, and Aboda Village is called Outset Village (I actually think Outset Village is a nice nod at The Wind Waker; I can imagine the Hero of Winds Link naming the village after his original home, Outset Island, when he and Tetra first settled on the land!). I imagine that these changes will also be present in the European version of the game. What's even more strange is that at least with the Australian release so far, the differences are in the manual (and on the Australian Spirit Tracks website), whereas in the actual game the names reflect the US ones.

If you are a European gamer, comment below and let us know which names are used. And if you come across any other differences, comment as well. I've updated the site to reflect the ones I've found so far.

The US version uses phrases that are whimsical in nature or playfully describe the places.

Whittleton (lumberjacks village) is a play on the word Whittle, to carve small objects out of pieces of wood.

Aboda Village (Link's town) is a play on the word Abode another word meaning home.

Character names reflect train culture...

Byrne (Burn, as in burning coal to drive a steam engine)

Cole (Coal)

Steam (as in Steam Engine)

Anjean (Engine, as in Steam Engine)

How Strange...

Does anyone know what is it exactly if translated straight from Japan?

I prefer Staven to some Byrne or whatwasitnow. And Outset is also better, in my opinion.

Scott, mine's the same. The manual and the actual game differ. The Australian ST website also follows the manual; Byrne is called Staven on the characters page. Anyone else playing the European game, are there differences between the manual and game also? Or is the village called Outset and Cole's lacky called Staven in both manual and game?

It's wierd, my Aus instruction manual calls him Staven, yet my Aus game stills calls him Brynne. (The first village is still the USA name as well)

Thanks for letting me know so quickly Rojinshu!

This is going to make talking about the game and writing the walkthrough very confusing :P
